We believe that Solar energy is the future, and there is no better way to invest in both saving the planet and your own future benefits than this fantastic energy efficient measure.
Lets start off with the basics
Solar PV, also know as solar panel electricity systems or photovoltaic panels, are placed on top of your roof in order to generate electricity from the sun’s rays via photovoltaic cells. Creating your own electricity means that you won’t have to buy or use as much energy from your energy provider, meaning your energy bills could significantly reduce (1).
Not only this, but there are many Government scheme benefits for having Solar PV, which include The Feed In Tariff and The Export Tariff, meaning you could also get paid for having them on your roof based on the amount of electricity you generate, as well as save money through your electricity bills by creating your own instead.
The amount of electricity you could produce depends mainly on the location of your home within the UK, and people of North Wales could be in the best position to produce significantly more electricity and benefit more from payment through government schemes than homes higher up north (for example Scotland).
According to the Energy Saving Trust a typical 4kw system could generate roughly a normal properties electricity needs (around 3800 kw/h) in London and a typical solar panel system in Scotland can generate up to three quarters of a households electricity needs.
In North Wales, you could be entitled to save and earn around £635 a year. This is done by saving money on your electricity bills, and receiving payments through the feed in tariff and the export tariff based on the amount of electricity you generate.
Below we have generated a breakdown of rough payments you could receive and we have also estimated savings on your energy bills for a typical 4kw system in Aberystwyth, Wales. (1)
Location System Size Feed In Tariff Payment Export Tariff Payment Electricity bill savings CO2 savings (per year 1st July-30th Sept)
Wales 4kw £460 £85 £85 1,750kg
The Tariffs last for 20 years and prices of the tariff’s rise based on inflation and vary dependable on where the property is located and roof type, however you could see yourself saving and earning up to £20,000 over the course of this time (1)
2 recent customers, Julie and Greg, were living in a 4 bedroom detached house in Prestatyn with their 2 children Jess,4 and Karl,8. They admitted that they thought they were paying too much money for their energy bills, especially since there were 4 people under one roof, and were hoping to put some money aside and invest in opportunities in their children’s future.
They already had a relatively average energy efficiency rating of a C, but came across an article which described to them that a house with this energy rating or above would mean they benefit more from having Solar PV panels, and were entitled to earn money for doing so via the Feed in Tariff.
Greg called our Tempo office and spoke to Caz who arranged a survey on the following Thursday morning after going through a few short pre-qualifying questions.
The survey was carried out which took around 45 minutes and a copy of the energy certificate was sent to Julie and Greg so that they could calculate their personal yearly savings from having a Solar power system and their following earnings through the Feed in Tariff.
They had a South facing roof with limited shading, therefore benefitted the most from the scheme and decided to call in to book for an install the following week.
Our MCS qualified install team completed the project within a day and helped Julie and Greg get the correct information together in order to apply for the Feed in Tariff and within two weeks they were registered to receive payments. They also had the opportunity to sell electricity they didn’t use back to the grid via the export tariff.
A year on and Greg and Julie gave us a break down of the Solar PV costs they received
An annual tariff income of £458
Electricity bill saving of: £125
Export tariff income of: £79
Expected profit of in 20 years: £13,240
Julie and Greg are now able to save a significant amount towards their Children’s future and hope to use the money earned for Karl and Jess’ university fee’s
