Energy bills to rise twice as fast as predicted

Rhodri Andrews

By the year 2020, energy bills are predicted to have risen by over £120 a year, due to the use of inefficient heating appliances.

With many predicting that bills would rise by around £60, the new figure has caused quite a stir with consumers, proving that energy bills are rising a lot quicker than first imagined. With people spending less on luxuries, having new heating systems installed at their properties is not seen as a necessity, due to the high price of new boilers nowadays being around the £2000 mark. However, the government will be implementing partial subsidies from the green taxes for those that are making an effort to make their home more eco-friendly, by installing more energy efficient measures and appliances.

The sudden forecasted increase in energy bills is due to the current state of the economy, and how little extra people have to spend on luxuries such as more energy efficient appliances such as lighting, televisions, kitchen appliances, meaning that many people will have to pay the increased prices of domestic energy in the future, due to not buying more energy saving measures now.

Trewin Restorick, chief executive of Global Action Plan, said: “Consumers are hit twice when faced with rising energy bills. They’re paying for unnecessary electricity usage due to energy-inefficient appliances, and then forking out for ever-increasing subsidies to produce energy that is not actually needed in the first place. We need to boost the uptake of energy efficient appliances in the UK. Financial incentives that directly benefit customers’ pockets are key.”

Ministers are interested in introducing a scrappage scheme to those that are willing to improve the efficiency of their homes; however, no official plans have been put into place yet.
